Perching Birds - Passeriformes

A204 Perching Birds - The Passeriformes

More than half of all bird species are passerines. There are more than 5,400 of them. They include many of the most colorful and beautiful animals on earth. These birds perch in trees. To do so, they have three toes that face forward, and a "thumb" that faces in the opposite direction. This grasping mechanism is the defining characteristic of the group. The order has not been changed by the recently-adopted Sibley-Ahlquist Classification System.
This is the second title in our new Bird Orders series.
